Projects in Action

Our Key Initiatives

REEFlect is actively engaged in impactful projects to protect and understand our oceans. Here's a look at our main areas of focus and recent successes:

Smart Buoy Development

Currently building our smart buoy for Ghana deployment, featuring LoRa communication and Raspberry Pi base stations. Designed to be open-source and low-cost for schools & NGOs. Data will be openly shared via openoceans.life.

Global Outreach & Engagement

Expanding our impact through strategic partnerships like COPG, with beach cleanups in both Ghana and the United States, successful climate movie showings, and our new Mozambique mangrove reforestation project with WFP and Planet Multiservices (PMS).

Securing Our Future: Recent Funding

We've secured $12,000 in funding including $11k from the 1517 Fund and $1k from our COPG collaboration, fueling our conservation efforts and technological development.

Technology in Action

Our Technological Approach

Harnessing data and technology for marine conservation.

REEFlect integrates custom-built hardware like our smart buoys with advanced data analysis techniques, including machine learning, to provide actionable insights for ocean protection. Our open-source approach aims to democratize access to these tools.

Sensor Data Collection & Analysis

Our smart buoys provide real-time data, which is processed and analyzed to monitor marine environments effectively. All buoy data is openly available via openoceans.life.

Open Source & Collaboration

We believe in collaborative efforts. Our technology is developed with an open-source philosophy, encouraging participation from schools, NGOs, and citizen scientists.

Democratizing Ocean Data

A core part of our mission is to make ocean data accessible and understandable, empowering more people to contribute to conservation.

R&D

Pioneering Research & Innovation

REEFlect leverages technology and scientific research to deepen our understanding of marine ecosystems and develop new conservation tools.

Smart Buoy Infrastructure

Developing robust smart buoy systems with LoRa communication technology and Raspberry Pi base stations for reliable data collection and transmission. Our open-source ocean data aims to make marine information freely accessible.

Machine Learning for Oceanography

Exploring the use of ML in oceanographic data analysis, including projects like Gaussian Process for Sea Surface Temperature (SST) prediction, focusing on internal R&D.

On-The-Ground Impact

Community-Powered Conservation

Mobilizing volunteers and partners for direct environmental action, from local shores to Ghana.

Our beach cleanup initiatives, including our recent successful event and climate movie showings in Ghana, demonstrate our commitment to tangible environmental improvement and community engagement. We provide resources and support for local cleanup efforts worldwide.

International Cleanup Efforts

Expanding our reach with events like the Ghana beach cleanup & movie showings, working hand-in-hand with local communities.

Volunteer Mobilization

Empowering individuals to make a difference through organized and supported cleanup activities.

Building Local Partnerships

Collaborating with local organizations like Clean Ocean Project Ghana to maximize the impact and sustainability of our conservation projects.

Our Path to Impact: Educate, Innovate, Act, Secure

A multi-faceted strategy to drive ocean conservation, supported by community and foundation funding.

Educate & Inspire

Through our Coasted Africa youth marine science curriculum, workshops, and climate movie showings in partnership with Plastic Oceans, we educate communities about marine ecosystems and conservation.

Innovate with Technology

We develop and deploy open-source technologies like smart buoys to monitor ocean health and make data accessible via openoceans.life.

Mobilize for Action

Organizing global initiatives like beach cleanups and fostering a network of volunteers and partners to create tangible, on-the-ground change.

Secure & Sustain Growth

Actively seeking and securing funding through grants (e.g., $15k from Awesome Foundation) and community support ($11,517 raised) to sustain and expand our impact.
